Downtime announcement?
Quote:anyone else having problems with FTP?
Well, my FTP is working fine along with all the rest again, but I wouldn't be surprised if the network outage caused a lot of noise and related problems. I'm inclined to give them some time still to sort it out. Believe it or not, even including this incident Dreamhost is still the best provider I've ever been with.

This is like a 1,1% refund... Whatever plan you're on, it can't be worth the trouble for such petty cash. I'd much rather have DH do the actual work. I'd happily pay that much more if it had helped. Wouldn't you?

I sent this to support, but I'll post it all here for you as well. I scheduled a call back.

---------------

You guys are normally pretty good with your uptime. As of late, that hasn't been the case.
Twice now, you have failed to email users letting them know why the service was down.
Josh was aware of this problem from the last outage, but nothing was done this time to
prevent this problem.

The system stats page is a farce and should probably be removed from the web panel.
DH did add a comment about accuracy to the top of the page, but as of late that page
isn't even close to the actual services you're offering.

As the saying goes, once is an accident, twice is a coincidence and three times shows a
real problem. For some this is the fourth outage in the past couple weeks. A few minutes
here, a half hour there... is totally understandable, especially for shared hosting. A few
hours today, a few hours last week and a few hours the week before deserves an
explanation.

Here are some questions for you:
1. Since your web panel has been proven unreliable and customers pay for 24/7 support,
what other method(s) for contact is DH going to implement? I tried emailing
support@dreamhost.com during one of the last outages, but never received a response.

2. Considering DH has been experiencing debilitating problems with their internal
network, what plans does DH have to fix these and come up with a backup solution since
the primary has proven unreliable?

3. Why should users continue to host with DH? In the past I've been willing to pay a little
more than other hosts, because of the uptime I had grown accustom to. Now that I'm
paying for a web host that makes me look bad...

I'm not the only one disappointed in your service. One forum I frequent has quite a few of
your customers. Some of them I referred. Here's what they're saying:

http://forums.dealmac.com/read.html/f=1/.../t=1657186

http://forums.dealmac.com/read.html/f=1/.../t=1638664
http://forums.dealmac.com/read.html/f=1/.../t=1638647

The latest post sums it up for how most of us are feeling
"I really want to switch, but switching is a hassle. I used to recommend them to friends,
but no more."

Thank you for your time.

I see some people are saying they're back up. Is there anyone still down? Two sites I know are on dreamhost appear to be up, but mine is still down. I am also still having email problems- receiving but not able to send. Anybody still experiencing problems?

Yup, all seems to be working again OK for me now. Sending of email didn't work until a few moments ago, however, and mail sent to me during the down time I *think* is starting to trickle through. -- Either that or it was incorrectly dated spam that just came in. Smile

FTP is working for me. Hopefully it'll all stay up tonight and tomorrow. Irritatingly, I have a presentation tomorrow which I'd normally just present online but I'm going to have to do a CD-ROM backup just in case it's not working again tomorrow morning. Means I'm going to have to hard-code ALL the PHP pages so they work on the CD! Grr!

This I do not need! Sad

Downtime announcement?
Just some thoughts/comments:

-In general: it'd be nice to receive notification earlier rather than later. It really does help. But, I also know from their end that often notification incurs panic and floods of gripey emails and phone calls...particularly if an announcement is made without details about the situation. And the time spent on responding to gripey emails and phone calls is better spent resolving the problem at hand. After all, we can easily see ourselves that there is a problem.

- The one engineer thing: it only takes one good network engineer to troubleshoot a router problem. If they'd said 30 network engineers I'd be worried. If your computer crashes, how many people fix it at once?

- The support thing: I, myself, have never had (even recently) anything but good response time with the Dreamhost support folks. I suspect any delay would really be a matter of what was being asked of them. If there's down time, the most they can really say is that they're working on it (which is almost silly). If it's a value-added service, well, that loses priority if there's down time.

- In general: Dreamhost has been, compared to anybody else I've ever dealt with, honest and responsive. I'm not sure what's going on in their little world but I'm guessing it's a matter of facing the same obstacles that are faced everywhere: Timing and limitations. And I'm not sure what the limitations are, and we know there's a lot of bad timing, but I'm positive they're not just sitting on their butts giggling maniacally!

i agree for the most part.

whatever issues DH has had recently, i really hope they resolve them because i would really like to stay with DH.

i see your point about the gripey emails, but when they fail to alert their customers about an outtage, a) the customers don't know whether or not DH is aware of it, b) whether it's just their account/domain(s)/etc, c) send frantic emails "re: WHAT'S GOING ON?!?!"

if they at least regularly told people that they were aware of the problem and working on it they might seriously reduce the amount of panic emails.

ALSO, i hate finding out one of my sites is down from a user. makes you feel like an idiot, ya know?

"hey man, why is your site down?"

"um, oh it is?! um, yeah, i dunno... Sad"
