Why use Darwin rather than HTTP?
Hiya, Just wondering why you would use the darwin media streaming rather than just uploading it to your normal webspace? I mean you cant stream live content im finding it hard seeing the point. Also do you think that DH will ever allow streaming of live content?

I thought the "site of the month" did live streaming? I know that they do make the stipulation that a quicktime file has to be properly "hinted" to be streamable.

You can check it in the wiki (wiki.dreamhost.com) by searching for streaming.

(note, two things here. 1. DHSOTM implies a live feed (but it might be hosted somewhere else) 2. a file needs to be specially prepared to be made streamable using the Darwin server.)

Wholly

Could you link me to the site of the month please?

DHSOTM? I realised it needed to be hinted for streaming on a darwin serer but i dont see the advatages :x. Is it because it will play in quicktimes player? Or could it be it handles multiple connections better?

You can see a full list here: https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=home.dhsotm&

Now, the hinting allows the server to manage the stream to the client (quicktime or another quicktime compatible player) so that playback can occur at the same time as the file is downloaded. (rather than the client drinking at the firehose as fast as it will come down).

There should be lots of things out there to explain how it's done right. A quick google search turned up:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=qui...gle+Search

and

http://www.washington.edu/computing/web/...ktime.html

This should get you started!

(note, I've not actually done this stuff)

Wholly

They do, but the streaming isn't done through Dreamhost's servers. They use Destroyer.net and LeetRadio.com.
