Files Forever for Album Launch
Josh and dreamhost staff-

I am considering using files forever as the sole means of distributing my upcoming album. It will be a free distribution (I am not charging for my music).

Do you think dreamhost can handle this? Is it reliable enough?
Let me know what you think.

It's a beta. I would say it is buyer beware.

That's my 2-cents.

Last night Josh and his tech team with the minor assistance of yours truly and other customers reporting problems successfully troubleshot 2-different major issues.

They got them licked... so that's good.

Personally, if I were you, I'd do it since you're giving away your music anyway and I'm sure that DreamHost will devote the resources it takes to fix what needs fixing and get it up to speed... but, it's very clearly advertised as a beta.

I'm a little confused. My understanding is that Files Forever serves, essentially, two purposes:

1. "permanent" online storage;
2. easy payment for customer-provided content

If you're planning to release an album for free, why wouldn't you simply put it on your own website, where anyone can download it for free? Then, it's up to the downloader to worry about storing it, if they're concerned that you'll take the album off the site.

If you put it on Files Forever, aren't you forcing downloaders to pay the 53 cents minimum (I think that's what it works out to, no?) to DreamHost?

Well, there IS actually one benefit over offering the album (for free) on Files Forever over just hosting it yourself on your website..

Anybody who downloads it via FF gets it permanently added to their FF account, so if they ever lose their hard drive or anything they'll be able to redownload it from the same URL, forever, even if you stop offering it for free or something.

(And, although it's not much now, we eventually envision people's collection of files stored on FF being a lot easier to browse, organize, tag, share, etc.. than just files you download to your hard drive.)

But yeah, it's very beta still and you might be better off just hosting it from your web site for now if it's free!
