IP address for domain be used w/sub-domains too?
Certain services require an IP address, and I'm wondering if an IP address is assigned to a Domain name, say "www.anydomain.com", whether or not those services requiring an IP address could be used with a sub-domain such as "secure.anydomain.com". OR, do I need to assign the IP address ONLY to the sub-domain?

In other words... do I need to buy separate IP addresses each time I have a separate "site" that needs secure services that require an IP address?

Examples of how one could use a single IP address to serve the needs of several sites would be appreciated. Likewise, situations when it would be advisable to set-up additional IP addresses would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Jem

Every unique hostname that you want SSL for requires it's own IP address. So to have SSL on both http://www.example.com and secure.example.com, you will need two IP addresses and two SSL certificates.

One to handle SSL for multiple sites is to first set up secure.example.com and use subdirectories there for any other applications that need SSL. So for secure services for http://www.example2.com, you might use https://secure.example.com/example2/. This way you only need one static IP address and one SSL cert.

This works best if you're developing your own sites/applications. You may have trouble modifying some existing apps to use another domain for secure pages.

Thanks! Your explanation helps.

So, if I were to setup "secure.example.com" with an assigned IP address as my "secure server space", how would this affect where MIVA is installed?

Are ALL Miva files (including specific files for multiple stores) stored in the "secure server", or are only portions of the Miva install stored on the secure server?

Would the hierarchy look something like?

https://secure.example.com/miva/store01/...
https://secure.example.com/miva/store02/...
https://secure.example.com/secure_forms/

Etc.

Where "store01" and "store02" might be the Cart fulfillment portion of different stores linked to from two totally different domains? And "secure_forms" is simply a directory unrelated to MIVA where secure forms are processed using the same SSL and certificate.

Thanks again!

Your example scenario is definitely possible in general, but I can't speak to how DH's Miva installer might set things up.

I'm actually not the least bit familiar with Miva, so at this point I'll have to defer to someone who is.
