"error while trying to use an ErrorDocument"
Do others' sites' "404 Not Found" say also:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to
handle the request.

?

Have I messed up my config somehow, or have DH configured Apache to use an error document that is missing?

Thanks.

Nope. Do you have a .htaccess file anywhere in your site? Sounds like you have one somewhere that's trying to load a non-existant error doc.

Try looking in your DH panel under Goodies->htaccess/webDAV and see if there is anything there.

Thanks Dec. No, there's no .htaccess file. The problem affects various domains inc one freshly created, and having never had any files uploaded to its space.

Confirmed by Panel:

.htaccess / WebDAV for http://www.testweb.chrisjj.com/
You currently have no configured directories on this domain.

Yup, that shows the problem too:

Not Found
The requested URL /adsf.html was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I don't know then... I don't get anything about an ErrorDocument. Try submitting a trouble ticket?

By default, Dreamhost uses a file called "missing.html" as the error document.

That error message means, "not only could I not find asdf.html, I also couldn't find missing.html!"

There are two ways to fix this:

1. Create a file called missing.html for your custom 404 page;

or,

2. Tell the server not to look for a custom 404 page by adding this line to .htaccess:
ErrorDocument 404 "Not Found"

Hmm... so they've make a configuration that by default is bound to cause an error? Where's the sense in that, I wonder.

If you don't see it on :

http://www.testweb.chrisjj.com/asdf.html

then what do you see? Perhaps your IE is set to show "friendly" (browser-substituted) error messages.
