So little spam...
I'm curious.. I own a domain, clean with public email address in it, and I still only get 8 or so spam a day.

I have friends getting hundreds a day.

I feel left out. Wink

Does dreamhost filter with some standard set on the main mail relays? (something aside from their spamd you have running).

'just curious.

Yes. We do some fairly conservative checks. We check for obviously spoofed HELO strings, and we block based on an internal blocklist as well as the CBL (cbl.abuseat.org). While we were a bit nervous about using a third party blocklist, the CBL does an amazing job of blocking lots of spam with a very small number of false positives. I don't know the exact percentage of inbound mail that we block outright. Any blocked mail will be sent a reject message during the SMTP transaction which will result in a bounce to the sender (from the sender's own MTA) in almost all cases (this is different from us accepting the mail and sending a bounce out, which causes lots of "backscatter" to forged sender addresses).

These checks are done on the spam filter machines as well.

Thanks for the rundown.

Great results, whatever the means.
