No more PM? I'm sad
Since I can't PM the staff about this, I'll post.

Like others here, I get PM spam. No big deal, as it's easy to ignore, but spammers need to be blocked from spamming. But blocking the PM feature closes down an often-used avenue for sending private information we don't want to share with the world. And for some people, PM is the only way they have to contact some of the other users. It's not like you'd want to post your email address for them to contact you.

Can't the admins use User Group Promotions to open up PMs for regular participants?

This isn't the first time. Back in march I posted about it and andrewf said it was a mistake and he fixed it. Maybe he will fix it again...

RE: No more PM? I'm sad
Agreed, if the PM system is being abused then it shouldn't be taken away from all, use permissions to allow use of this valuable tool.

Frankly, I have yet to get a spam PM here so i'm actually surprised this is even an issue.

I was in fact close to making the suggestion that to combate the spam problem dreamhost should empower a few of us regulars with the power to get rid of it (take it out of public view). It seems to me that if spam was removed very quickly it might get the point across that it's futile to post it here.

Many forums give power users additional privileges, and sometimes even a special private board just for those users.

RE: No more PM? I'm sad
The thought of letting some of us moderate crossed my mind, but I'm not sure if DH policy would allow that since that'd give us access to some customer info, such as email addresses.

@Rho-ohki, this time isn't a glitch. It's due to PM abuse. I get it every week or two. I'm pretty popular with the hard up ladies looking for dates.

I didn't have a problem with PM spam either. sdayman you must just be lucky

I agree with you LakeRat it would be nice if some of us who regularly post would be able to zap spam messages. I get so annoyed when I see a bunch of threads with new posts and all of them are spam posts reviving ancient threads.

RE: No more PM? I'm sad
I've had power user status in other forums before. One doesn't really need the ability to see private info such as email addresses.

I need to install MyBB somewhere and take a look at what can be accomplished via settings and permissions, but generally a forum can make 2 private boards, one for general chatter amongst power users and staff, and another for removed posts. In this manner removed posts aren't really deleted and can be reviewed. If a power user is abusing his powers it can be figured out because the removed posts still live and can be review, they just are not in public view.

I really do believe it would make this forum a much better place.

RE: No more PM? I'm sad
did we also loose the ability to quote posts automatically? I've tried multiple ways and can only seem to quote manually with [ quote ] tags. I tried both in FF and chrome.

That appears to be some kind of glitch in the MyBB 1.6.4 upgrade which I ran recently — I'll try and see what I've messed up this time. Smile
