Pics have been made but at this point we have to get approval that they can be shown.

Being completely honest here, If I was Dallas or Josh of Dreamhost I might let one strategically taken photo to be used. However in the name of corporate security there would most likely only be one and even itmay nto be "day-to-day" authentic.

I'm not sure how a random picture of a row of servers is any threat to security.

In fact, I'm not so sure why so many are waiting with baited breath for a photo or a row of servers. They all look pretty much the same, don't they? Long thin box, lights, wires, fan...

Different type of security than what we talk about everyday.

Here is a scenario:

Dreamhost posts pics and gianthost on the east coast (i'm thinking of the 'one' that used to run 16 page adv spreads in pcmag's print edition) uses the pics in a blog post of there own-- with words like "look at the competitions datacenter, and look at ours. ("their's" is very orderly, brightly lit, spacious and you don't actually see a single cable when all the covers are on, and every server has their corporate logo etched on the front plate.)

The point here, and you will understand if you have ever been to a few "co-location facilities", is that these types of data centers are typically not the pretty brightly lit rows of servers sometimes depicted in 'one' hosts advertising. Many times the facilities are shared with others and actually have physical cages built to provide physical security of equipment.

We might understand the context of the pictures, but I can almost be willing to be that someone somewhere would try to explain the context of the very same pictures differently.

RE: Pictures of new datacenter?
i wish Dreamhost would spend as much time worrying about password security as they do worrying about what a potential competitor might do with a picture of their datacenter.

RE: Pictures of new datacenter?
...in all honesty it appears the posters in this thread are more worried about the pictures than dreamhost is.

One the other hand, I completely agree that dreamhost needs to immediately, if not sooner, change how passwords are handled.

Would still like to know if this is going ahead or not. and i agree the password issue does have to be addressed now before something bad happens.

Well, if it takes as long to get the pics as it does to improve password security, it will take about 5 years... see post #5 here: http://discussion.dreamhost.com/thread-130097.html
