Different IP addresses?
Hey guys, thinking about getting hosting at DreamHost for 10 different websites. Just curious about something.

On http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html it says "Unlimited" for "Domains Hosted".

Does that mean unlimited domains each hosted on different IP addresses?

Or does that mean unlimited domains hosted on the same IP?

If it means the latter, that means I will have to buy 10 hosting accounts ($8.95/mo x 10 websites) to get different IPs for each of them, right?

RE: Different IP addresses?
If you need separate IP addresses for your web sites, you will need to purchase unique IPs for them. We don't make any guarantees about what IP addresses you will end up with otherwise, and opening multiple accounts is a violation of our Terms of Service.

RE: Different IP addresses?
Also be aware that your domains will share the IP-address with domains from other users - unless you purchase unique IPs.

And this is normally no problem at all. Why do you want different IPs?

So if I host 10 domains, it doesn't automatically mean they'll all be on one IP address - but they all share a chance of being assigned to the same IP (maybe 2% chance, 10% chance, 30% chance, etc) right?

I just like to keep safe from an SEO standpoint.

I wouldn't even say that. The assignment of domains to IPs is not random, but it's not entirely predictable either. It's not unlikely that a bunch of sites created at the same time will end up with the same IP addresses as one another, due to the way we assign them internally, but that may (or may not) change later on, especially if you are moved to another machine or if we have to rebalance the sites on your machine.

Bottom line: If you care about what IP addresses your sites have, give them unique IPs. Otherwise, we make no guarantees.
