i cannot find the wiki installation under ~/hostname/,
i checked dns setting and find one line of record shows that the ip address of wiki.domainame.com is different from the ip address which is used by ssh tools.

I take it you did the simple installation?

I believe you do not have access to the core files using 'simple installation'

right, i used simple installation, so i can use a subdomain, but it is not installed under my ssh directory.
it seems i can specify installation dir for wiki if i use custom install, but i cannot specify a subdomain when using custom install?

Create your subdomain first, then do a Custom install and your subdomain will appear in the list. You do not need to provide a folder name, it can be blank. It is best to install MediaWiki in a subfolder in the subdomain anyway ('w' for example). if you then make use of short URLs for the pages in the Wiki it is simpler, having the Wiki in the root can cause problems.

It's not too difficult to install manually. So you could create your own subdomain, download the software and place it in the subdomain folder, then run the installation.

wiki.domainame.com/config/index.php

Assuming you already have a MySQL database setup it should be quite a quick process
