Embeding a Video Player
Quote:I also noticed that when I open the video's html page that Firefox stretches my left layout box way out of proportion while the page is loading. IE does not do this. Any ideas on what is happening here? When the page gets loaded the box goes back to normal.
Same thing happens with Opera too. I only scanned your source, but it could be that the DH code to insert uses a <div> which might be breaking the layout temporarily until the page loads completely.

Quote:QuickTime can put a poster image inside the frame to be viewed before the player arrow is selected. On Flash it is just a black box. Surely there is a way to get a photo or poster in the black box. Any suggestions on this?
That's a "poster frame" Wink

In QT it's written as:
QT_WritePoster_XHTML('Click to Play', 'Video/ZelmaHaines4.wmv.mov-poster.jpg',

In Flash it's written as:
so.addVariable('file','http://www.imnotafraidpublications.com/Video/ZelmaHaines_320x240.flv');
so.addVariable('image','http://www.imnotafraidpublications.com/Video/ZelmaHaines4.wmv.mov-poster.jpg');
so.write('ZelmaHaines_320x240.flv');

Screenshot Here

While making your edits, whack in a center tag for the flash object.

Allrighty, thanks to you we got poster frame done except I have a big question. The poster frame that I inserted came from a previous upload I made with a .wmv.mov-poster.jpg . This was created in Windows Movie Maker and was previously used by the QuickTime player that I first embeded. If I had never used QuickTime I would have never had the .jpg to use. If this was the case, like it will be next time I add another video, how will I be able to generate a poster frame? Does the DH converter provide this function?

Now here are some other issues that I have bumped into about this video. Today I re-edited a new .flv video to include the white letters that come up on the screen during playback like the .mov video had. I used Super to convert it from .avi to .flv and I reduced the file size a little. I then uploaded the file and replaced the old file name with the new file name in the HTML code on my web page. It didn't work. Am I doing something wrong or is the converted DH file name somehow magic and is the only one that will work?

Any ideas on these two issues. I figure I owe for all your help. Thanks

Rex

As is the case with all things Windoze there are many, many ways to accomplish things.

I'm a big fan of open source (I'm a cheap bastard) so let's check out VideoLAN / VLC

First we'll run it and setup our capture settings:

1. Start VLC Media Player
2. Settings > Preferences (or hotkey CTRL S)
3. Highlight Video in the left pane
4. Select your destination folder using the Browse button
5. Choose your snapshot format (png or jpg)
6. Click Save

Screenshot

Now that we've setup the snapshot destination and format of choice, we can load up a video and Video > Snapshot to capture the currently displayed frame. Navigate to the destination folder to see all the captures we've made.

In the case of the screenshot above the format would be vlcsnap-###.png in C:/My Poster Frames

Choose the one you like best and (optionally) rename it to the same name as your video.

To save editing text onto your original footage, you can add text to the poster image using your image editor of choice.

Let's check out how to do that with another freeware staple: Irfanview

1. Open up your capture in Irfanview
2. Select and area for your text
3. Edit > Insert text into selection... (or hotkey CTRL T)
4. Click Choose font and.. choose a font! (and colour, size, alignment, etc.) (screenshot)
5. Type in some text and hit Okay
6. Save your new poster image.

If it doesn't look "right", click the Undo button and try again.

Here's a screenshot of some text overlaid on the VLC Settings screenshot.

Help should be free. If you use open source and freeware alot, consider slinging the author a dollar Wink

i've tried modifying the wiki's code, the developer's code, and the https://media.dreamhost.com/ sample code, all of which are a bit different. none work for me.

http://www.davidicus.com/portfolio/neversoft/
i'm testing at the very bottom of that page right now. the video either doesn't show up ("get flash" message) or when played, displays an endless loading spinner. sigh.

the FLVs play fine locally.

script looks like this now:

<script type="text/javascript" src="https://media.dreamhost.com/swfobject.js"></script>
<div id="GH3_pauseBunny_480x360.flv">
<a href="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer">Get the Flash Player</a> to see this player.</div>

<script type="text/javascript">
var sd = new
SWFObject('https://media.dreamhost.com/mediaplayer.swf','mpl','480','360','8');
sd.addParam('allowscriptaccess','always');
sd.addParam('allowfullscreen','false');
sd.addVariable('height','360');
sd.addVariable('width','480');
sd.addVariable('file','http://www.davidicus.com/portfolio/neversoft/GH3_pauseBunny_480x360.flv');
sd.write('GH3_pauseBunny_480x360.flv');
</script>

I get a 404 at the file source. Is the path/filename correct?
