I agree with you on that! What makes a thing "easy" also makes them "easy to abuse". Wink

Poor Customer Service
Quote:I think DH is a bit slow too.
Perhaps DH needs more database servers. It's too easy for anyone to one-click install some heavy web application.
I don't agree, actually. Well, maybe I agree, but with conditions.

I came to Dreamhost because they offered some pretty impressive one-click installs. For my limited use of these applications, Dreamhost has been great. I also think that I take care not to overload my installations with extra plugins that will overload the servers if and when traffic on my sites goes up. I think *this* is the main problem.

In fact, I'd argue that the problem isn't the one-click installs, but the non-one-click plugins that people add onto their one-click installs.

I think the "Easy" one-click installs serve two purposes. First, they're... easier. Second, at least the Wordpress "Easy" install doesn't allow users to install additional plugins that are resource intensive. Users would have to go to the slightly harder one-click install to do so. I think this extra step/effort will serve to keep people who really don't know what they're doing at first from shooting themselves in the foot.

GREAT Customer Service - YMMV
A lot of these complaints stem from the fact that DreamHost cultivates these unreasonable expectations that anything is possible on their servers. Nobody forced them to offer 500GB of disk space and 5TB of bandwidth, along with shell access, the ability to use Ruby on Rails, etc, etc.

Don't blame the OP for trying to use the resources he was promised and getting frustrated when they ran slow as molasses.

Afterall, how else is he going to use up 5TB of bandwidth?

Umm... by having a static site? By having original content worth downloading?

The OP and most people complain about the slowness of their highly dynamic database-driven sites that are under relatively high traffic load or are otherwise not performance optimized. What does this have to do with disk usage or bandwidth utilization? Almost nothing.

Overselling is all about alleviating any fears that people have that they'll get charged exhorbitant overage fees if they happen to use more disk space than is allotted or using more bandwidth in one month than they thought they would.

For myself, do I think I'll use all the disk? Never. Do I think I'll use more than the average VPS offers me? Yes.

Do I think I'll use all my bandwidth? Only if my VMWare image becomes wildly popular. Do I want to take the risk that that will happen and I'll get charged $400 in overage charges like with my cellphone bill some months? No.

The only way I can construe that to be true is by acknowledging that DreamHost's pricing "enourages" the clueless to risk very little - Bandwidth and storage are not related to CPU/RAM or "speed" to anyone who understands how a webserver works. Wink

I wasn't blaming anybody for anything, but it is fair to point out the realities of shared hosting and *his* responsibility to determine the type of hosting arrangements he should make in accordance with what he want to run on his site.

It shouldn't be DreamHost's job to assume responsibility for consumer ignorance.

Why should he be trying too? Is there some rule that says you are only a wise consumer if your max out your quota? Is he a pig at a trough whose goal is to "get all he possibly can", or is he a consumer looking for webhosting with adequate room for his sites, and bandwidth for his traffic, for a few coins a day?

Meh - your self-proclaimed "disillusionment" is showing, and pretty much speaks for itself. Wink

As I've stated before, if there's a problem with your website loading slow just let us know. We're more than willing to find the cause of the slowness and point you in the right direction, or take action ourselves if we need to.

To the OP, I know I told you to open a ticket for the slowness, and you never responded if you did or not.

I really appreciate your presence, and response, in the Forums, GregR!

This last post just reinforces, in my mind, that DreamHost customer service, or claimed lack thereof, is *not* the issue in many cases like this. Wink
