I’m pretty sure this is a boneheaded question, but as I wait for my support ticket to trickle down through 121 other requests (I have great empathy for whoever works DH support on a Sunday night), I figured I’d ask anyway, because it’s keeping me awake with worry.
If my account got disabled, would someone tell me? That is, would there be notification that goes along with it? Would I see something in my Control Panel?
I’ve been on a ‘limbo’ evaluation server for a while, trying to track down heavy CPU usage. I’ve made some progress, following advice from the KB and from a Happy Dreamhost Employee™, but I still have up days and down days. I was gritting my teeth, expecting to be told to upgrade to dedicated hosting. But apart from automated e-mails, I’ve seen no sign that my days were numbered.
Well, tonight, while I was working on one of my sites, in fact, all my domains disappeared. Every single one under my account. First they all reported basic 404 errors. Now I’m getting the oft-reported message: “Site Temporarily Unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this. error id: bad_httpd_conf.” It’s been about five hours now with no change.
The weird thing is, my SQL servers (subdomains of the affected domains) are fine. My e-mail is fine. But my home directory is gone (I’m dropped into a root directory of some kind when I SSH telnet in). And when I try to find my directory under ‘home’, I see:
username -> .doesnotexist/username
So while I know “bad_httpd_conf” errors as reported here usually mean something burped somewhere, the above makes me think that a switch was deliberately flipped, and I was moved into oblivion for a specific reason.
Except, again, that I haven’t heard anything. And my Control Panel shows everything is hunky dory. Quota okay, bandwidth okay, all paid up, and then some (nine years with Dreamhost means decent Rewards points).
Any ideas? Anyone been disabled before? What’s it like?
