Working Behind The Scenes

#1

I currently have a site that is up and running without problem.

I would like to upgrade my site with a new Wordpress template. I would have to keep my current site active, but be able to work separately on my new template until it is ready to go live.

My questions:
How do I do this?
Will my current site still be accessible?
How long do I have to work on it?
After I’m finished, how do I kill the old site in favor of the new one?

I love Dreamhost.

Thank you.

There are multiple ways about it, but if you want to just be able to tweak the theme, I would suggest using this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/

That will make it so only the admin can see the new theme.

The alternative would be to make a second blog in a subdirectory however it’s not always quite as simple to merge all your data if this takes a long time.

Actually, my current site is NOT a Wordpress site.
When I’m finished with the new Wordpress site, would I be able to clear the old site out my current directory, then load all of the subdirectory files into it?

Sorry for double post…

Oh hey, that’s even easier!

Install WordPress in a subfolder. domain.com/site/ (or whatever you want to call the folder, mine is /blog/).

Build it all out there, and then follow these directions: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install

I’m seeing the light!
It’s going to be a while before I finish building out the site, but I will return to this thread to let you know how things work out.

Solutions…quick solutions - that’s why I like Dreamhost. I have 100% up time here and clear, quick answers to questions. At GoDaddy 30%-45% up time and any solution was a coup! SO glad I jumped ship!

Thanks again. You made my day!

Nice theme, too!

Thanks! They’re a very good resource for outstanding Wordpress themes. Excellent support. Unlimited ways to customize the templates. Built-in skin generators. You name it. All the bells and whistles.

I like those guys as much as I do the Dreamhost guys.

Thanks again!

Here’s another of my sites using a similar Mysitemyway template. Used the skin generator to buff things up.
