Wordpress site has very slow latency

#1

So my website often takes a very long time to access – but when it finally does load, it loads quickly.

Now after I’ve loaded it once, then subsequent accesses are usually much faster – for a while. Anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours later the same problem occurs again.

It’s wordpress, and this is true both of the regular website and of the control panel.

The traceroute below does go to asterisks after it hits dreamhost. I didn’t have the patience to see if it ever ended, so I just let it run until step 23.

Any ideas?

Hi there!

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your site. Upon visiting siftingtothetruth.com, just like you said, I noticed it was super slow to load, but once it finally did, everything else on the site loaded quickly. Checked your apache instance and it had some old hung processes stuck there. Killed those and restarted it, and your site’s now loading quickly upon first access. I’ll email you shortly, and you can reply to that directly if you have any follow-up concerns/questions for me. Thanks for your patience!

Great, thank you!

I am experiencing the same symptoms with my site thechiwi.com. I’ve been trying the get help from the Support team, but have been constantly informed that the site is as fast as it should be.

That is probably right since the site loads fast once the connection with the database is “awake”. Problem is that it “goes to sleep” often and then it takes forever to load.

I’d really appreciate some help here.

I also had the same latency problem when I started my wordpress site. I had a developer check on it’s apache and to counter the slowness, since it’s a wordpress site, I also installed some cache so that it won’t load too long the next time anyone visits the site. Maybe it can work for you too as an added solution.

Thanks Jake,

So, with the installed cache do you still experiencing the problem or cashing solves it?

What cache did you install?

Can someone check the apache instance of schoolvoorjournalistiek.com too please? It seems almost dead today.

If you don’t have an open support ticket on this you should. I’m sure DH_Elle S will look into this for you when she finds your post, but the best channel is to open a support ticket, then if you need more attention post about the problem.

The ticket is opened last week LakeRat. Got tips how to speed up the WordPress websites. I’ve been working on that last week. Useful but not accelerating. We host our sites here more than 6 years and it has never been that slow…
Then I saw a lot of corresponding posts in this forum …

McJoost, you have multiple WP sites on one domain. No matter how you look at it, having over a dozen WP installs is going to be slow. Even if you had Multisite, you’d be slowing down your server a lot. Also not all of your WP sites have caching, so that’s going to affect them.

That said, I see you have nextgen-gallery installed on many sites. There was a problem with version 2.0.23 which has been fixed by the developers. You need to make sure that you’ve upgraded that AND it’s been activated at least once, in order to clean out your SQL database properly.

Thanks for commenting. I didn’t know the three multisites would slow down that much. I’ve some work to do. Thanks again.

Oh yeah. I would never recommend running Multisite on anything but VPS. Same goes for more than 4 single installs of WP. if you have THAT many separate sites, you need more power. It’s just the nature of the beast :frowning:
