Wiki sites

Ok so I am seeing lots of site that say they run wiki software. What exactly is it. I know what wikipedia is but what exactly does the wiki software do. Is it like say forums have software and blogs have software.

Wiki software simply allows you to setup a collaborative web site, where your visitors can add new content and/or edit existing content. Wikipedia is one example of such a site, but there are many more out there, such as the cool DreamHost Wiki.

The Wiki software that DreamHost provides from the ‘one-click install’ page is MediaWiki, you can obtain further information on this software at the link below;

So if people can edit or create things on the site then how do you prevent people from spamming the crap out of them and changing actual good pages to something that says like we own jooo or something.

There’s a lot that can be written about this, but in brief, you allow edits only by registered users and disable users who abuse their editing priviledges. You typically also registration by IP to prevent people just re-registering again.

There’s obviously much more to this, but these are common practices.

So in reality don’t have a wiki site unless you can be there to moderate things and watch people posts.

The short answer is that you can not easily protect against such things, as the history of many Wikipedia pages will confirm. Apparently, even the DreamHost Wiki is subject to such attacks.

I guess it comes down to how much time the wiki admins and regular contributors are willing to commit to stay on top of things.

Well, you don’t personally have to be there all the time watching every page. Your user community is usually pretty good about notifying you of problems.

Also, as the sponsor of a wiki, you don’t have to be the only administrator. The thing to understand about a wiki is that it becomes community property and your community will help care for your wiki and protect it.
