What info do I put in to add in subdomain?

#1

Ok… so I went into the webpanel and I clicked at bottom to add new domain/subdomain.

I already have the domain www.crochetgarden.com fully hosted. I want to add tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com (subdomain).

So, I go to the page to add a subdomain and i get this:

Domain to host: (sub-domains okay!) <— What do I put here? (Do I put tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com) ?
PHP Version: 5.1.2 4.4.2 <— which version do I click for this? (my main domain has the 4.4.2 clicked)
Extra Web Security? (highly recommended)
FastCGI Support? (advanced)

FTP user / CGI-runs-as user: <-- Can I use the same name as on the main domain?
New username:
Web Directory: /home/username// <-- Do I put anything here?
Logs Directory: /home/username/logs/domain.com/http/

How do you like the www in your URL?
Both http://www.domain.com/ and http://domain.com/ work.
Add “www.” if somebody goes to http://domain.com/
Remove “www.” if somebody goes to http://www.domain.com/

(You can host unlimited more domains, unlimited more sub-domain

Yes, and that is basically all you need to enter before clicking the Fully host this domain now button, all other settings can be left on their defaults.

After clicking the button you should have a new sub-directory in your home directory with the same name as the sub-domain, just like your primary domain has its own sub-directory.

Probably best to leave this on the default, unless you have a need for a specific PHP version (my panel actually defaults to PHP 5 for new domains/sub-domains).

Yes, unless you need that sub-domain to be under the control of a different user. Specifying a different user will mean having to use this users credentials when logging in via FTP to upload to the sub-domain.

You don’t need to, it will be filled when you enter the sub-domain name above, but I guess you can change it if you want the web accessable directory for the sub-domain to be named differently.

Yes just add the subdomain in. So for example.com it is subdomain.example.com or even second.subdomain.example.com if you wish.
Choose whichever PHP you wish. 5.1.2. is the latest but you can change it later back and forth as you wish.
You can use the same username if you wish from the drop down or create a new one.
Choose extra web security. Then choose FastCGI if you want to.

Best to use bothe www and non www to cover all bases.

Great! Thank you for all the info! Now… when I do put in that info… how do I upload/ftp to it?

Will it be ftp.tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com ?

oops, ok I read this more clearly now:

After clicking the button you should have a new sub-directory in your home directory with the same name as the sub-domain, just like your primary domain has its own sub-directory.

So… now I think I am set… going to go try all this now!

Ok… I put in all the info… does this normally take a few days just like when you put in a new domain for it to propogate?

EDIT: Also, one other question… to make the page that when they put in tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com into thr address bar, and the page that comes up, should this page be named: index.html and put into that directory?

It is usually pretty quick since the main domain is already propagated. In practice it is usually instantaneous. Just keep trying to reach it and you will know when it is working. If you used the old username you can ftp using that and then just cd to the new subdomain folder which as you say is just another folder.

Yes to make the subdomain appear using just http://www.subdomain.example.com/ place an index or home.html file in there.

ok… well I went in back to create subdomain page… and, it seems I wrote the directory wrong… I thought I backspaced it all but I didn’t. So… I redid it, again using same tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com and then writing in the correct directory for the folder (before I had it tinybloss and this time I put in tinyblossoms). Will this mess it all up having done it twice… will it get confused thinking there are 2 folders, tinybloss and tinyblossoms?

Also… I am now editing my links for people to go to that page… when I put in the link in my html code, would it be http://www.tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com or http://tinyblossoms.crochetgarden.com ?

Also… When making the subdomain… I did put check the box for both (www.yourdomain.com) and (yourdomain.com) to work.

Thank you all so much for all this help! I have never done a subdomain before.

That is okay you will just have two subdomains to play with.
You can delete one if you wish from the manage domains page and click the x.

Both your links would be okay but when writing your html it is normal to just use the domain you created such as subdomain.example.com.
The www part is really a subdomain but DreamHost does not create the folders and gubbins for it, it just redirects it to the subdomain you created.
