Virtual Host of a subdomain

#1

Hi,

I have just signed up to Dreamhost and I am quite surprised that there is no easy way to set up Virtual Hosts in the httpd.conf.

I have a website hosted on another hoster, I don’t want to move it. The DNS is elsewhere as well and I don’t want to move it. In my Dream Host account I want to set up a site like dev.mydomain.com.

I have already added a record to the DNS and mapped it to the Dream Host IP. I have managed to add a subdomain to Dream Host but only after adding and then deleting the domain itself. All I get now when I hit dev.mydomain.com is:

Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.

error id: “bad_httpd_conf”

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

There’s no good reason to have deleted the main domain. I’d leave it, then ignore it. Try:

  1. Re-adding the main domain (just to make things seem proper)
  2. Edit the subdomain, do nothing, then click Save Changes. This often clears up the bad_httpd_conf glitch.
