When creating a new user, what is the url to that user name? For example, i created the user name flippy on the web url, domainhere.com. What would be the url to that directory?

Sorry, i’m kind of new to this kind of settings and to this webhosting.

Do you see the domain listed here?

https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=domain.manage&

If so, follow the “visit” link. If not, you’ve not yet added the domain under the user.

Domains have URLs. Users have domains…

I did try that, i created something.mydomain.net in the manage domain tab, but when i click visit, “page can not be displayed”.

I’m just wondering, if i made the username “test” in manage users, and i uploaded the file whereimi.html using that account’s ftp, how would i view the file if i own the URL, mydomain.net

It can take some time for DNS to propagate for subdomains. That could explain the error you got, rather than that the site was broken.

So for every user i make? I have to make them a subdomain, such as theirname.mydomain.net?

I can’t just access their files through mydomain.net/theirusername?

This is one of the DH security things I’ve not looked at. Between conversations of the hosting owner having access to everything and then the next email saying that only the “user” has access to their own files I think I’ve managed to get off.

I’m sure one of our guys that has done this more often will be able to help.

You do NOT have to make a subdomain to have access to their files. That would be a bit of a pain and a security issue.

I guess i’ll wait till someone has knowledge on this. I want to give my friend access to to ftp, but i have no idea how to access his files if he does upload something.

When creating an ftp account you can then remap a subdirectory in the control panel. Look under domains then remap sub-dir. Type in a name for the sub directory then it is accessable via the web. Now you can access his files with out logging on. Doing this makes it public, so if you want to make sure there are not prying eyes, set up an htaccess file to hide the index. Then he can tell you the name of the file or better yet email you a link to the file and you can access it.
If you need more control, you can still use his username and password to ftp his files.
The remapped directory is stored in his ftp account not your, so you will not see that subdirectory when ftp’ing your account.
