User Authentication

apps

#1

Hi,
I would like to set up user authentication having three levels–guests, registered users, and members. Each level would be able to access different levels of content on my site.

I am thinking about using .htaccess for this with a mySql backend but would need a way to automatically add users in their various groups to my .htaccess file.

Does anyone know a good script for this? Does anyone have an alternate suggestion to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks a lot for your help,
Rita

With regards to HTTP authenticaion, technically its not very difficult to do since the the files involved are text files with a simple format. So if you are into programming, you’d want to check out the Apache documentation first: [url=http://httpd.apache.org/docs/howto/auth.html#basic]Authorization, Authentication, Access Control: Basic authentication[url]

I don’t know of any scripts you could install to do all this for you, but if you don’t feel like re-inventing the wheel there are probably library functions for PHP and Perl that you can use.

 Perl / MySQL / HTML+CSS
