URL/domain/DNS question

#1

I just purchased my domain name and updated thd DNS info last night. Today I noticed that when I go to http://captivereefs.com the url still points to the former owners page. However, if I use http://www.captivereefs.com, it points to my dreamhost server. Is there something else that needs to be updated so both variants point to the host server?

DNS updates are propagated across multiple locations and it takes time before they all share the same information.

If you are on Windows, try running the command ‘ipconfig /flushdns’ from a Command Prompt window. Keeping that window open, you can run ‘nslookup captivereefs.com’ to see what IP address you are getting now. If you want to know what it should be, run ‘nslookup captivereefs.com ns1.dreamhost.com’ and the DreamHost nameservers will tell you directly. Naturally it should match what you get for ‘nslookup www.captivereefs.com’ already though.

For me currently both hostnames are traced back to DreamHost.

I noticed that now both captivereefs.com and www.captivereefs.com are now both resolving to the former owners server again. Maybe I am hitting different DNS which haven’t got the current info yet? How long does it usually take for DNS updates to finalize?

It takes up to 3 days. Your WHOIS setting is correct, so you’re good to go as soon as DNS catches up.

Yes , it does take 3 days or so. When I did it first time I was nervous that something went wrong. But it has to go through a long process.
