Uploading index.html

#1

I am trying to upload a splash page that I can leave up while I develop the rest of the site in Wordpress. I am using Filezilla to try to upload the index.html file (and a couple other pages that go with it) to the root and have the site go live. I’ve done it but it isn’t working. When I visit the site, which is kellner2013.com, it routes me to a godaddy page that looks like this: http://kellner2013.com/?nr=2. I thought this was odd because the domain is registered and hosted with dreamhost.

I thought all I needed to do to take the site live was upload my index file into the root folder, is this incorrect? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi There, you need to point your domain to Dreamhost’s servers (right now they point to GoDaddy) and then, using the Dreamhost panel set that server up to be fully hosted. You can then upload your splash page using any FTP software while developing your WP site, either in a sub-directory, sub-domain or temporary dreamhosters.com domain. You can use the Dreamhost one-click to easily get Wordpress up at your site.

Are you a Dreamhost customer?

Yeah I am, I bought the domain and have it hosted through Dreamhost.

looking up the domain here: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=kellner2013.com on a 3rd party whois server it’s showing both the registrar and the nameserver to be godaddy.

What does this page https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=domain.registration& in the dreamhost panel show you? is the domain listed there?

You also have your files in the wrong root (and apparently deleted the right one…)

You removed the kellner2013.com folder and put everything in /home/username/ instead, which won’t work on our servers. I recreated the home/username/kellner2013.com folder for you and put the files in the right location, since you can’t move all of them (like you don’t want to move the .alias and logs stuff).

Once your nameservers switch over, you’ll be good to go

Thanks everyone!

Yeah for some reason I thought we had the domain registered with dreamhost too, but was totally wrong about that.

Thanks so much for fixing my mistake Ipstenu-DH.

just log in at godaddy and change the nameservers for the domain to

ns1.dreamhost.com
ns2.dreamhost.com
ns3.dreamhost.com

It won’t start working right away, you have to wait for propagation, in simpler terms “for the new phone books to be distributed” Usually take 12-24 hours could take 72 for all locations worldwide.
