Transfering from my current ISP to Dreamhost

#1

Hello All,

I am currently trying to figure out the best way to transfer my old websites, their databases and various other web files from my old ISP to Dreamhost.

I have tried doing an FXP, (transferring files between ISP’s using an FTP client such as wsFTP) but that does not seem to work. So now I am back to square 1.

I can make a complete download from my old ISP and then upload it to Dreamhost, but since I a) have about 20+ gigs of stuff and b) I am living in China and my old ISP and Dreamhost are both in the US, this would take forever since top download speeds for me hover around 5k a second if I am lucky.

So any suggestions on how to transfer all of my files would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

John

FXP should work: Try using a different client (I’ve heard FlashFXP works well).

If you can’t get FXP to work, how about tarring up all the files on your old host, and then using wget through the DH shell to grab the tarball and decompress it?

Very little to do with either emus or farmers!

@EmuFarmers - Thank you. I will give FlashFXP a try. Unfortunately, my current ISP doesn’t allow me to compress everything on my site into a tarball. :frowning: (One of the reasons for coming to Dreamhost.

Just login to your shell account and use a ncftp to transfer the files, that’s what I do everytime. It even compresses the files on-the-fly.

I like mc very much.
just type mc, on your DH shell, and connect to your old host by FTP/SSH
