Sub-Domain - Sub-Directory?

#1

What is the difference between “Sub-Domain” and “Sub-Directory”?..

I want to add a “Sub-Domain”.
The KnowledgeBase states: "simply log into the Web Panel - Select the Domains section and click on Add Domain sub-section.
My Web Panel does not have “ADD DOMAIN” as an option under the Domains Section.

it’s a text link at the bottom under your domains list

Yes,… I know about that link,… but my question is "What is the difference between “Sub-Domain” and “Sub-Directory”?

Are they the same thing?

The reason I ask is bacause I DID use the link you described and when I set it up I now have a “sub-directory” NOT a “sub-domain”. And it is not even listed in my list of Domains.

Also the url turns out to be "http://mydomain.com/sub-directory"
I thought I could make it “http://sub-domain.mydomain.com

So I searched the KnowledgeBase and I saw the instructions to “simply log into the Web Panel - Select the Domains section and click on Add Domain sub-section”.

No they are not the same thing at all

-A sub domain is like a totally different website, and will be hosted like one.
EX: sub_domain.main_domain.com

-But a sub directory is like part of your main website like a different folder(directory).
EX: main_domain/somefolder/somefile.html
So the sub directory would be the folder that somefile.html would be in and not directly in your main directory

I hope this is clear to you. I’m not the best at explaining.

Thanks alldclarks2
You explained it very well.
That is exactly what I thought too, however when I went through the steps of trying to set-up a sub-domain, using the link, it seems all I was able to do is set up a sub-directory.
I hope someone can explain what I must have done wrong.

I just tried to add a ‘Sub-Domain’ again.
This is what happened…

I went to 'Manage Domains’
Clicked on the link ‘add New Domain/Sub-Domain’

Screen says: "Please choose the kind of hosting you would like to add"
Fully Hosted
Domain to host [ Blank space ] (sub-domains okay!)

I typed in ‘my sub-Domain Name’ in the Blank space and clicked on “Fully host this domain now”

Message says “Invalid domain: domain name must contain a dot”

I typed in ‘my sub-Domain Name’ with a dot after it.

Message says “Invalid domain: domain name must end with a letter of nunber”

“letter or number” ? ? ?

I don’t understand ? ? ?

I sure would appreciate if someone would help. I have emailed Support but am still waiting for a reply.

Use the fully-qualified hostname: “sub.example.org” (without the quotes, of course).

If you want useful replies, ask smart questions.

Oh,… ok… Do you mean like this–> Sub_name.Domain_name.com ?
