Ssh Passwordless Login - Agent admitted failure to sign using the key

I have followed the published procedure for Ssh Passwordless Login several times and keep on getting “Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.” when I try to ssh.

The procedure is here:
My command only version of it is:

ssh-keygen -t rsa
scp ~/.ssh/
mkdir .ssh
cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
chmod go-w ~
chmod 700 ~/.ssh
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

ssh then produces:
“Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.”

Thanks for reading.

Where did you generate the key? On your home machine, or on your web server here?

Home machine

My guess is that the web server doesn’t like how your home machine generated the key. Try those same steps here, then copy your private (and public) keys to your home machine.

There’s also the possibility that your home OpenSSH is incompatible with OpenSSH here. Which version do you have at home? Here it’s 5.1p1.

Hey there,

having the same problem on ubuntu natty

$ ssh -version OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-1ubuntu3, OpenSSL 0.9.8o 01 Jun 2010

I don’t really want to generate a private key on a remote server, as that would defeat the “private” part of it. Any other ideas on how to solve this problem?

I’m trying to log on to moran.

Got it. the new key, generated on the client was not yet managed by ssh-agent.

a simple $ ssh-add
fixed things.
