Speed test?

#1

Is there any file available to do a speed test and to a ping/trace?

I did a trace to dreamhost.com and it gave me:

1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms ua-213-113-116-66.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se [213.113.116.66]
2 4 ms 3 ms 3 ms ge2-0.cr2.svl1.se.bredband.com [195.54.119.225]
3 4 ms 3 ms 4 ms pos6-0.cr1.svl1.se.bredband.com [195.54.124.13]
4 5 ms 5 ms 5 ms pos6-0-0.cr2.sto1.se.bredband.com [195.54.123.181]
5 5 ms 5 ms 5 ms pos3-0.br3.sto1.se.bredband.com [195.54.123.250]
6 6 ms 8 ms 6 ms 64.215.185.81
7 174 ms 174 ms 173 ms so0-3-0-622M.ar1.LAX3.gblx.net [67.17.64.49]
8 174 ms 173 ms 174 ms GE1-GX.dreamhost.com [67.17.162.162]
9 175 ms 177 ms 174 ms dreamhost.com [66.33.201.141]
10 176 ms 174 ms 174 ms dreamhost.com [66.33.201.141]

Looks like a big drop at the gblx router node.

I notice that you are in Sweden, is it possible that the hop 6 to 7 increase in your trace route is due to crossing the Atlantic and continental USA? Remembering that the DreamHost servers are located in California.

I see a similar thing here when my packets cross the Pacific (I am in Australia). Unfortunately, it is mostly due to the distances involved and the speed of light, not much we can do about it I’m afraid.

Also, many routers are configured to give a low priority to ICMP traffic, this can result in a lower ping response from such routers during time of high traffic, even though normal traffic will not be greatly delayed.

I guess a file to test speed would eliminate the ping/performance question

Thanks for that post, it gave pretty good speed (~360KB/s), roughly twice the speed I get from bluehost.com.
If you could keep the post until tomorrow it would be great, want to test when most europeans “sleep”

No problem, I am glad to help when I can.

I average 150-160KB/s from here, but that is the limit of my DSL connection (1.5Mb/s), so I can not expect any better.

Good idea, it is best to test these things at various times. I will leave the file in place for a couple of days.

I’ve a 100mbit fibre connection, but I seldom get more than 2000-2500KB/s from Europe during the evenings and 500-800KB/s from US. It’s a home connection, not dedicated business line.
Not sure where apple.com host their hdtv-trailers, but from there I get 7-9MB/s (sustained speed).

You are making me envious. Such a connection would cost more than the average wage here in Australia, and would only be possible within one of the major cities.

I live in a semi rural location and the best on offer is 1.5Mbit, although some of those closer to the cities have the option of 24MBit ADSL2+ connections.

Would you be interested in adopting a middle aged Australian? I don’t eat much

lol - I’ll pass on the adoption
At lest “down there” you don’t have to pay 1.85AUD per litre to fill your cars.

(my connection only cost ~20USD/month, although it’s capped at 10mbit upstream).
