SpamAssassin - is it at all effective?

I installed (version 3.1.7) it for the first time yesterday and it hasn’t caught a single spam mail yet - everything has been passed thru. Part of the problem is the low score it seems to assigning. Here is one of the most flagrant examples :

Looking at these tags,
DEAR_FRIEND,FORGED_HOTMAIL_RCVD2,MAILTO_TO_SPAM_ADDR,
SUBJ_ALL_CAPS,UPPERCASE_75_100

a score of 3.1 is quite surprising.
What gives?

I tried it outfor two weeks or so on one of my domains, and it didn’t really catch anything unwanted. What it did was catch almost everything of my legit mail in my language, Danish. So it got turned off again pretty quickly…

That one got a score of 3.1. You could lower your threshold for the Required Score to 3 instead of your default of 5. You can also customize the scores for individual tests, such as making DEAR_FRIEND worth 2 points.

I find that SA is good for getting rid of the most obvious spam, and I use SpamSieve on the Mac to get rid of the rest.
