Spamassassin: autowhitelist hosed, can't clear it

I’m running Spamassassin 3.0.2 on three user accounts. In one of those accounts, the autowhitelist has gone completely bugnuts with the result that most spam is assigned a negative score. (I should’ve turned it off in the first place.) At this point I just want the autowhitelist to go away completely for this user, but I’m afraid that if I try what I have in mind, I’ll break something.

First I tried running spamassassin --remove-from-whitelist but get an error:

Cannot open bayes databases /home/mongo/.spamassassin/bayes_* R/O: tie failed:Can I just kill the autowhitelist by deleting the auto-whitelist file in the .spamassin directory and then setting use_auto_whitelist 0 in user_prefs, or will this break things?
