Anyone here using a procmail based spam filter such as http://www.spambouncer.org/ with dreamhost? I assume that it would only work for email accounts that are also shell accounts. correct?

Thanks

Jeff

That should be no problem.

Having used both spambouncer and spamassassin, I currently lean a bit towards spamassassin (http://spamassassin.taint.org)… It’s also possible to set this up on a DH account (see the recent thread in the ‘Programming’ section of the forum.

It should work with any account that has a login (ie an FTP account would work but not a POP/IMAP only account). Any login can be a shell login now anyway, and it’s much easier to make mistakes with procmail if you’re editing the file on a Windoze or Mac machine, so it’s probably best to edit your procmail files on the machine.

Is DH considering adding SPAM filtering option to the control panel? It would great if one of the UBL services were used and user definable filters could be applies at the smtp level instead of something like procmail. With the increase of SPAM and viruses this would be very useful.

There’s a recent thread about this in the Programming forum. I think it’s entitled ‘SpamAssasin’ which gives an insight into what Dreamhost are evaluating/considering.

(note - it’s ‘spam’ not ‘SPAM’ - http://www.spam.com/ci/ci_in.htm )

As Wil mentions, some options of this sort are under consideration, possibly using the per-user UBE patch to postfix. However there’s currently no work being done on implementing this.
