The error message you get will happen when you're using the HTTP protocol instead of the FTP protocol.
When you goof up like that you are bound to get geek-speak that means "I know how to run web sites but I am not running the web site you are asking for and perhaps this is something my administrators need to fix."
To avoid this situation:
When attempting to connect to an FTP site, make sure the URL starts with the right scheme:
Beware that web browsers may assume that 'ftp.pixi.knight47.com/' means to use the HTTP protocol.
ftp.pixi.knight47.com is a hostname. A hostname points to a machine. The machine runs FTP and/or HTTP server software. The HTTP server software ("httpd") must be told what web site you want to see. If the HTTP server software does not know that web site for whatever reason you have an "httpd configuration error". DreamHost does not automatically configure the HTTP server software to run web sites on FTP hostnames.
