I’m just curious what the server load is on your server at DH? The server on which my pages are located tended to be around 1 or 2, but since yesterday it’s mostly over 10, today it stayed between 30 and 40 for a long time. Is this normal for DH servers? On all my other servers I generally get a load of around 1. I’m on “welchs” and I think the load is to high since some of my pages (PHP/MySQL) take over five minutes to load at times.

This was also nice:

[welchs]$ uptime
07:40:38 up 5 min, 1 user, load average: 349.61, 148.39, 56.54

After that uptime stopped responding.

Garth’s load is <10. Either there’s a network problem near your server, or something running on it is overloading it.

14:48:23 up 54 days, 12:23, 2 users, load average: 1.77, 2.03, 2.03

It looks like your server is/was having some serious load issues!

Hmmm well im on Welchs too, and yeh I was on Holiday that day, but I have seen Welchs clog up every now and then.

This is what im getting now:

test1: 06:52:30 up 17:35, 7 users, load average: 6.97, 10.29, 11.8

test2: 06:54:40 up 17:37, 7 users, load average: 13.86, 11.54, 12.54

test3: 06:55:47 up 17:39, 7 users, load average: 14.23, 11.91, 12.18

So yeah I think it is still a bit high, but is running alright for 7 users… (lol i think)

[fresca]$ w
10:57:49 up 30 days, 15:03, 15 users, load average: 8.18, 7.54, 7.02

I have several questions about this thread and some other, similar ones about loading speed and performance.

First. How do you get these figures? There is obviously some kind of shell command. And then, how does one (me) interpret them.

Second. The broader issue. I have a site that has a lot of Flash video interspersed with text. Sometimes the videos snap right in with no delay and stream right along. Sometimes it takes a while for them to start and there is a lot of loading and buffering going on. I look at my activity monitor (OS 10 utility) and see that the bitrate is way down or even intermittent. Now, the question is: how do I know whether it is a DH server issue, the internet itself, my ISP, the copper between the CO and me, or what?

Are there any utilities or services that measure this?

I have used the CNET bandwidth speed measuement site and it does not show any problems.

All my videos are set for a max of 516 kbs. I have DSL.

If you want to see the site, and you can go to

I am on Broadway (DH server).

From the shell prompt, run “uptime”, or “w” to get basic numbers - you can run “top” to see more of what is going on.

Interpreting them can easily become the subject of “holy wars”, and “acceptable” numbers depend on many things (including one’s definition of “acceptable”).

For me, on Dreamhost, I’m ok with anything below 5-6, YMMV.

[sunkist]$ uptime
17:13:18 up 7 days, 8:09, 5 users, load average: 0.69, 0.99, 0.94
[sunkist]$ uptime

Load seems pretty good to me

If you telnet to your website and use the ‘uptime’ command, it will display your stats.

use SSH unless you want everyone to see everything you do… including passwords. Telnet = DANGEROUS.

P.S. rlparker - thanks for the comment on load averages you’re comfortable with. We’re seeing about the same values with good/great performance.

Thanks. I ran uptime and got:
18:50:46 up 29 days, 2:15, 3 users, load average: 3.67, 3.60, 4.12

So I guess that’s fine for load coming out of DH. But is there any good way to diagnose what could be causing delays between the server and my computer? I know there are route tracers, but do these also measure transmission time?

I’ve been happy with DH performance and I think it’s a great bargain. So it’s nice to be able to check the load on the server and confirm that the server is not being over worked. But I would still love to be able to find out where the bottleneck is on my videos.

Thanks for the tip of top command. didnt knew that

You’re welcome…it’s kinda useful at times!
