Secure Hosting

#1

Hi all,

I have a domain that I registered with DreamHost. I updated the DNS record so that the domain points to a personal webserver that I have, not affiliated with DreamHost. I’d like to use https:// on the domain, but I’m not sure what to do. I know that for DreamHost, you can only get secure hosting with a static IP address, but I’m not even using a DreamHost server.

What should I do?

Thanks,
Max

You need a fixed hostname with a domain you control, and a way of updating the DNS
records that allows you to update a hostname in your own domain with your dynamic IP address.

Hi Saldash,

My web server does have a static ip address. I was wondering how to use an SSL certificate with domain registered at dreamhost, and a hosting account somewhere else.

Thanks

DNS entries really doesn’t have much to do with it. Have you installed a certificate for apache (assuming you’re using apache) to use? If not google “installing ssl certificate apache”. You can get a free class 1 certificate valid for 1 year from startssl.com

If you have done that, but your problem is that when you navigate to the domain it’s not ssl, then the first thing to do is verify ssl is working by forcing ssl by typing https://yourdomainame.com in the browser bar. If that’s working then you can force http traffic over to https with something like the code below (be sure to edit line 3) in your .htaccess

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !443
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.example.com/require-secure/ [R]
