Second url address for missing files

#1

I have a ftp directory where my users can put & get files and break everything.

When they upload a file, when I have time, I transfer this file to a read only directory.

My problem is when they write a direct url address to the first dir in the html source, the link will be broken when I move the file.

My question is : Is there a way for a url link to first look at a specific address and then when the file is missing look at another place ?

The solution can be done using apache or a linux command, but how to do it ? My question seems not to be hard but, it may be not possible.

thx for your help

If a page has to be moved, you can use .htaccess to setup a permanent redirect:

RedirectPermanent /path/to/file.ext http://www.example.com/new/path/to/file.ext--------
