Removing index.php with mod_rewrite

I don’t want the x/ or index.php to be in the rewritten URL. For example, rather than

I have tried removing the x/ from the .htaccess file but then everything after the second level (x/downloads/Software/) messes up.
Can anyone help me?

Perhaps replacing the (.) with ([^/]) might help? Because otherwise ^/(.*)/$ will probably match /a/b/c/d/ quite happily…

Actually I figured it out. I just added a [L] to the end of every line.
