Redirecting insecure webmail to secure webmail?

#1

I’d like to redirect http://webmail. to https://webmail. for my domain so that all uses of webmail on my domain are encrypted. How do I accomplish this with the Dreamhost control panel?

#2

I was just searching the forum looking for the exact same thing… Does anybody know how to do this yet?

I don’t think it can be done by users with their shared host.

However, I believe one can vote for it in the suggestions list https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=home.sugg& – you want to vote for “Allow forcing all access to webmail for a domain to be via https.” in the Mail - Webmail section.

If these suggestions guide DreamHost admins to implement something sooner, voting for it will help us get this feature earlier than some other less voted-for feature.

Thanks for the reply… I just voted on it as well

From what I understand, I may be wrong. You need a unique IP address in ordert o have a “https” url.

You can purchase one in DH.

After you set the “https” up, you can redirect via DH panel --> Domains --> Manage Domains --> DNS --> Redirect

Am I day dreaming?

All fully hosted domains include a webmail subdomain, accessible through both secure and nonsecure protocols. It’s using a shared certificate, so your browser will warn you, but the panel specifically states that that is alright.

The only obvious solution for forcing the secure URI would be through .htaccess, but since you can’t actually place a .htaccess file on the webmail subdomain…better go ahead and vote if it’s important to you.

a stupid idea:
couldnt we creat a subdomain called webmail and inside that place a htaccess redirecting it to https://webmail.domain.tld or https://webmail.DH.com ?

What, you think I didn’t try that?

You won’t see the webmail subdomains with subdomains you’ve created, but look at the DNS records for one of your domains, and you’ll see it. Thus, you’ll simply receive a “domain already in system” error if you try to add it as a hosted domain.

ok, that what about an event stupider idea?
create a subdomain like email.DOMAIN.TLD and then use htaccess redirect to https://webmail.DOMAIN.TLD or https://webmail.DH

is it possible?
