Here’s a pickle…I was recently hired to redesign a client’s website. The old webmaster is someone that she no longer associates with. He wants money to release the login information to us. Obviously we are not giving him a dime. How can we at least gain control of the domain name?
We have a Security/Abuse department that can help with these types of situations. If the account was set up in your clients name you can contact us here http://dreamhost.com/contact/ if you haven’t already done so. You can also contact our abuse department directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
They would be your go to resource in these types of situations. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask us.
Hi Matt, I have submitted a ticket (which I understand that you are routing to the Abuse dept) and also forwarded my email thread with this webmaster to email@example.com. I look forward to getting this matter resolved. Thank you!
That being said — if the old webmaster registered and paid for the domain name with their own money, then it legally belongs to them, and you will need to negotiate with them if you want it. There’s really no way around that.
I am not sure who paid for the website, to be honest.
