Yes, Dreamhost (DH) allows forums. There is even a very simple installation option so you can get a forum installed in 10 minutes with very little work!

As a DH customer, you must follow certain Terms of Service and (linking to) warez sounds illegal to me.

What do you mean?
If you stop your hosting with DH, they will of course remove your things from the servers.

When you post your question in a forum, you get the answer in the forum.

Except perhaps when there’s a violation of DreamHost’s TOS, in which case there will NOT be any refund, just like any other host out there.

Yeah. Warez sites, etc. are not allowed. Trying to get around getting disabled through the use of a technicality (ie. having a disclaimer saying “I’m not responsible if you download XYZ, anti-warez people and police officers cannot enter”, etc) isn’t likely to be very successful.

Just the other day some guy tried that. When I disabled his account (a domain which contained a combination of ‘leet-speak’ and the word ‘warez’), he wrote back saying that he was using it for his own personal back-up. This, despite the fact that he had a disclaimer such as the one mentioned above, and even had a note there telling visitors (himself?) to post to his forum if they had problems downloading files.

He seemed pretty bent out of shape that we would disable his backup site, until I casually asked him why he was telling himself to post a message to his own forum asking for help if he had problems downloading his own backups. He never wrote back.

Ahh, the life of an abuse team member… :>

In the clear light of hindsight I see that my comments weren’t on the right track. Not wrong, but not right either. I absolutely agree this looks like warez, and I want it on DH servers no more than you do.

I would hope that any person promoting the illegal use of copyrighted software (or copyrighted anything, for that matter) would be immediately denied hosting. Warez traders are the same kind of scum as spammers and crackers.

Oh, come on. Software pirates aren’t even in the same league. Of course there’s a difference between casually copying your friend’s Photoshop CD and actually collecting and distributing pirated software, but to compare either one of them to spammers and crackers is a bit much. The degree of harm done by spammers and crackers far outweighs that by software pirates. Warez traders arguably only hurt the companies/individuals whose software they distribute. The actions of the others (and there’s a lot of overlap between those two groups these days) affect a far greater number of people, as well as doing actual damage to the operation of the internet as a whole.

Personally, I believe it is the same league, albeit on a different scale. Each time a “friend” gets a free copy of Photoshop, it costs that little bit more when I buy it legitimately. Every act of piracy, however small, has some “harm” associated with it.

We have lots of stories, here… My favorite would probably be the guy I disabled for spamming several years back. He wrote back promising to never do it again. I told him I’d only re-enable his account after he wrote a 2,000 word essay on why spam is bad for the Internet.

Surprisingly enough, he actually wrote one and turned it in. A man of my word, I re-enabled the account. He never spammed again.

And here I thought those student-discounted versions of Photoshop-and-other-software were so benign. But it all makes sense. Those discounted versions are bringing the prices up for everyone just like the pirated stuff.
