Ping /FTP speed is really slow from Italy / Europe

Hi, I have 2 plans here on Dreamhost. Everything works fine except ping times for transfering files via FTP. Here’s my traceroute:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 206 ms 200 ms 200 ms 192.168.100.1
3 217 ms 209 ms 219 ms host21-173-static.33-88-b.business.telecomitalia
.it [88.33.173.21]
4 216 ms 217 ms * r-na71-vl14.opb.interbusiness.it [80.21.163.13]

5 220 ms 211 ms 215 ms r-rm213-na71.opb.interbusiness.it [151.99.101.20
5]
6 * 203 ms 205 ms r-tin2-pomezia-rm157.opb.interbusiness.it [151.9
9.98.10]
7 212 ms 204 ms 202 ms r-mi226-vl4.opb.interbusiness.it [151.99.75.217]

8 203 ms 211 ms 214 ms mil25-ibs-resid-15-it.mil.seabone.net [195.22.20
5.157]
9 507 ms 481 ms 495 ms global-crossing-1-us-fra7.fra.seabone.net [195.2
2.211.42]
10 668 ms 688 ms 696 ms pos1-1-2488M.ar2.LAX2.gblx.net [67.17.68.218]
11 651 ms 658 ms 701 ms GE1-GX.dreamhost.com [67.17.162.162]
12 672 ms 676 ms 660 ms apache2-twiddle.punch.dreamhost.com [208.97.178.
197]

as you can see it takes really a lot of time…now, is there anything I can do to “cache” things and speed it up? Has dreamhost any solution to speed up its offer in Europe? Thanks in advance for your interest,

Dario

That trace route does look bad, but I think it has more to do with your ISPs upstream provider than it does DreamHost.

For comparison, I am in south-east Australia, further from California than Italy, and here is my trace route to my DreamHost server;

exactly what I feared most…speed is slow but only here in Italy. What I am asking is…is there anybody out there who can analyze the traceroute log for me and confirm your analysis? I cannot understand the various names of the various “hops”/nodes! Thaaaanks again!

Well, I don’t know for sure what kind of analysis you want, but a couple of things “jump out”:

  1. After your first two “hops” to get out of you local network, your next four “hops” seem to be you routing around in your ISP for damn near a whole second

  2. It takes another 3/4 of a second to get through “seabone”

  3. It takes another 1 3/4 secponds to get from there to your site.

Not good, but I don’t see that DH is the problem.

Some things I notice about your trace route, assuming your Internet connection was mostly idle at the time of the trace route.

Hop 2 indicates that you already have 200ms of latency before leaving your local network.

Hops 8 & 9 shows that the link between Italy and France (I think) is adding another approx 300ms.

Hops 9 & 10 looks like the link between France and the US, adding another 170ms or so.

Overall, I think your ISP, or the upstream provider that they use, has a really bad link to the west coast of the USA, at least at the time that you did the trace route.
