Pending approval

#1

This account is currently pending approval.

how long does this take.
paid via paypal a few hours ago

#2

Could take as much as 24 hours.

Some registrations are flagged for human approval.

Welcome to Dreamhost!

I’m in the same boat, waiting for account approval, and it’s been over 24 hours. I paid with a credit card, you’d think something like that would be nearly instant.

So far I’m starting to rethink my decision to use dreamhost. :frowning:

Waiting over 24 hours for approval when you paid via CC is rather odd. Usually it only takes long if you’ve paid with paypal through a checking account.

It shouldn’t take much longer, though. If it does, contact support.

Sometimes it takes a day or two for these things to happen, particularly if the application meets certain criteria (weird credit card, uncommon top-level domain, etc.) and therefore requires human approval. I suggest waiting another day before contacting support and moaning.

I would say this - I have been delighted by DreamHost thus far (over a year now), and I’m sure you have not made the wrong decision.

Which would you rather have?

A host that has a lot of shady sites that were paid for with stolen credit card numbers, impacting the quality of service for everyone else because spamming, etc.?

-OR-

A host that seeks to protect people by manually verifying some of the sign-ups that trip their internal alarms?

I know it’s probably very frustrating to not just be able to jump in and go, but you should take this as a sign that Dreamhost is deliberate and conscientious about how it does business, which, in the long run, is good for you, the customer.

Good luck!

I suppose… but with all due respect, how are they going to ‘verify’ me? I mean, it’s not like they’re going to ask for a photo id or something. It’s a credit card purchase online… that’s the whole point of the security code.

My guess is that they are having difficulties keeping up with their signups. That makes me assume, whether or not it’s ‘fair’ of me, that they may have trouble keeping my server online.

DreamHost has earlier on revealed that about 20% of their daily signups are fraud. Therefore they are doing a number of automated tests and some human tests as well.

Parts of the approval process is described in their blog:
It’s a fraud, fraud, fraud, fraud world
Why We Don’t Use CSC Codes

I guess you just have to be a bit more patient, but I know it’s difficult

It’s good that Dreamhost verifies and screens the customers up front. Otherwise it can have consequences for all of us - e.g. the dreamhost domains could be put on email domain blacklists if spammers get in.

Cheers,
Peter

I signed up for an account a couple of days ago and it was approved and ready to use almost immediately. Even the free domain was ‘pingable’ within 20 minutes or so.

However, I referred a friend to Dreamhost, he signed up for the same plan last night and his is still showing as ‘Pending’. He does have a rather common last name, so I guess that could have triggered the fraud process, requiring a manual approval.

I signed up yesterday and my account is wating approval. I even asked the support what’s going on and I got no answer. I am a legit customer.

I don’t think the accounting dept. is there on weekends. Wait 1 business day.

I am the friend of Mark who posted above, my account appeared to be stuck on pending approval, the account was activated after approximately 36 hours, I am still unsure why my account was flagged, can only guess it was due to me signing up at my friends residence so soon after he signed up.

All is good now though.

I too am waiting for approval. I used Paypal on Thursday evening. When I used it for our two previous ISPs it was immediate. Since it goes through a checking account, Paypal says it will take until 12/14 to clear. I looked in the bank account, and there is a temporary record of it today. I wish we had used a credit card now.

I asked for a temporary FTP username/password to FTP the files and the account doesn’t work! I’ve complained to the support people but so far nothing has happened.

I’m still waiting on getting approval from Dreamhost. The Paypal transaction has cleared the bank but I have no idea when it will show up in Paypal. How long after it shows up in Paypal is Dreamhost notified? After that, how long does it take for them to set up the account?

#16

I’ve seen these comments before - usually on Mondays or Tuesdays. I suspect DH’s accounting dept. is not open on weekends and there’s a backlog early in the week.

The Paypal money finally cleared today. The questions are now, when will Dreamhost find out about it and process the account?

I sent them the details I saw with Paypal so I hope this expedites the request.
