Password Protected Pages

Hello to all,
I recently was asked to take over a web site on Dream Host and had some questions that I hope I can get help with. I am basically a graphic designer with some web design skill. I am not as familiar with the back end of websites. I was asked to set up a section of the website where teachers can log into a private section for access to student tests. I am using Dreamweaver CS3 and want to know how to best setup a password protected area of the website for teachers?

check http://wiki.dreamhost.com/WebDAV

from DH panel click on Goodies -> htaccess/WebDAV and provide details.

[I am not sure if search engine robots are able to view the pages and cache them for pblic use so I’d disallow robots to that directory as well.]
