One-click installation

apps

I am pleased that DreamHost is now offering one-click installation of a range of open source tools. Perhaps this can be exanded to include things like AWStats.

I do, however, have a question regarding the way the panel is configured, and please forgive me if I’m missing something obvious. Why is it necessary for the domain to be switched to run PHP in CGI mode, instead of as an Apache module?

PHP as CGI is by far more secure and is the preferred configuration of DreamHost.

That may well be true, but it doesn’t actually answer my question. Why is it necessary?

More than likely because they have either only tested the one-click installer in a PHP as CGI environment or the one-click installer will only run in a PHP as CGI environment. The installer will convert your web settings over to PHP as CGI, but you can always change back after it’s done.

If you want a one-click install of AWStats, you could add it as a suggestion.

I did that, but I wouldn’t mind having access to both AWStats and Analog.
