One Click Install Forum

#1

I’m thinking of using the one click function to create two forums on one WordPress site. One would be an invitation-only closed forum and the second open.

I’m pretty new at this stuff. Is it hard to set up a forum through the one-click install? Am I biting off more then I can chew with dentures if I set up two at one time? Or, is it even possible to set up two forums on one site?

I find phpBB to be the second-easiest one-click install web application. WordPress is slightly easier, but phpBB is very straightforward.

BTW, I like SMF as well, but it’s not available as a one-click install.

Nor is MyBB, which is the best of the three. But the installation and setup is fairly easy, so the lack of one-click support shouldn’t be an important issue.

Why is MyBB better? I’m always setting up forums for one reason or another so I’m always looking for a better solution. In some ways, I really look back fondly to when I was managing the vBulletin based forum at work.

The basic forum, without mods (which can hog memory and CPU) looks and works better than both SMF and phpBB. The setup is closer in concept to vBulletin (which I use also).

You can check our setups at:

http://techbroadcasting.com/forums for myBB.

Give it a try for yourself

Not at all. You did Wordpress installation through one-click install. So you can set up phpBB too, even thats easier than Wordpress!!

Yep,you can either on two different subdirectories or two subdomains or even one on a subdomain and other one a subdirectory. Just needs different destination.

Although you can create two different forums,i think its better creating a single forum. Because you can have different(as many as you want) sections(that act as different forum just like ‘Curious about DreamHost’,‘Beginners forum’ and others on this forum) on a single forum. You can restrict people from using any section of your forum through different criteria. Such as limiting by number of posts the user posted, user groups(by creating yourself) etc etc. So no need to create two different forums. Just create a single forum that will also be easier for you to manage/administrate. As of phpBB is on the DreamHosts 1-click install, just proceed with it if you’re not experienced on self-managed installation or don’t bother to do so or if you’re not intended to install other application.
