Nvu/ftp/Dreamhost

#1

I took the advice the helpful people on this forum and am going to try and use Nvu to create my website. My question involves publishing settings for Nvu. They ask for “http address of your homepage” and “publishing address.” What, exactly are they asking for? Thank you for your help.

I don’t use Nvu, but I would take a guess that the ‘http address’ would be something like http://www.yourdomain.com and the ‘publishing address’ would be something like ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/yourdomain.com/

What I do is skip those entries and use FileZilla to move the finished files to the server manually. I prefer more control.

No luck, yet. My ftp server is mug.dreamhost.com. I’ve tried every combination I can think of but can’t publish. Says “530 error”

Here is what works for me. I’d rather use SFTP than FTP, but haven’t found how to do that.

Http address: http://mysub.mydomain.com/

Publishing address: ftp://mysub.mydomain.com/mysub.mydomain.com/

I think it’s a little helpful, but a little confusing, imho. And it doesn’t say anything about Sftp.

NVU doesn’t support SFTP. The goal for NVU seems to be to keep things really simple, even if that means not keeping up with web-trends. I don’t know if they’ve changed or not, but it used to be you couldn’t even create a new directory through their program. Thus the real solution is to get a real FTP/SFTP client and upload using that.

If simple and easy is what you’re going for then be happy with FTP

Before you freak out too bad there’s a known issue with servers named after beverages (“Mug” is a rootbeer in the US). The storage backing isn’t/wasn’t working properly.

Check http://www.dreamhoststatus.com for updates.

Wholly - IS NOT MY PROMO CODE. Even worse, I don’t get any credit for it. Use WhollyMindless for full credit. I’m really disappointed in someone.

At the time I originally posted, I didn’t know about the server issue. Would’ve been useful information to know. Now that the server issue is solved, I no longer get “login 530 error.” I get “error 550 no such file or directory.”

What settings are you using?

I’ve attempted severaral different settings without luck. They ask for:
“HTTP address of your homepage(e.g.:http://www.myisp.com/myusername)” and
"Publishing address(e.g.:ftp://ftp.myisp.com/myusername)“
I believe “myisp”=myhost=dreamhost.
my ftp=mug
My login error was obviously because of the server. But now it says “file–directory doesn’t exist.” Also, there is something on my domain now(not my file) but something nonetheless. It simply says"Index of/”

Do you have an active domain on the server? Assuming it’s called 2dmoon.com and the directory for files is called the same, I’d try the following:

Http address: http://2dmoon.com/

Publishing address: ftp://2dmoon.com/2dmoon.com/

My tests suggest your username only needs to go in the username box between the above and the password box below.

Have you been able to login with a different shell or ftp program?
