I have always heard great things about dream host, but I have to vent just a bit. I signed up and my experience hasn’t been so great.
I signed up for the annual plan w/ no activation fee. I decided a couple of months later I want a larger plan. Because its going to cost more, I can’t get hit with the renewal for a year all at once, so I want to switch to monthly. According to billing, I’ll have to pay a $50 activation fee to UPGRADE my plan on an already activated account. Instead of getting $20/mo out of me starting in about 4 - 5 months (when the prepaid amount would run out), they’d rather not get another dime for 10 months and I’ll probably relocate when my renewal comes due. That doesn’t make a lot of business sense.
I created a catch-all to my domain. I started testing and I’m getting about 3 out of 4 mails sent bounced on average with a “Relaying Denied” message. I wanted to be sure it wasn’t the ISP’s problem so I tested from Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail and BellSouth. All have the same experiences. It isn’t even associated with a single catch all address, just at random 3 of the 4 typically bounce from each host and 1 at random will get through.
I opened a support ticket. I realized I needed to provide exact errors, but find no way to add to an existing support ticket so I was forced to open a new one. Today, 20 hours later, no response or even indication that anyone has so much as looked at it.
Now, 20 hours might not sound bad, but when a business is bouncing e-mails to what should otherwise be valid addresses, its bad.
Worse yet, I’d opt for a larger plan that offers call back support but I just can’t swallow the pill of having to pay an activation/setup fee on an account that is already setup and active.
I’m early into this (2 months), but I’m quickly finding that DreamHost isn’t quite the dream I’ve been told it would be.
