Non-domain URL?

#1

Is there a way I can see the content of my website before I put the DNS change through? I want to make sure certain things are up and running before I transfer the domain to dreamhost. I know I don’t have a unique IP if I didn’t pay extra for one (and I didn’t) - is there some other way I can find my website?

Thanks!

You can cheat. I’m not sure if there’s an easier way, but this is how I do it… (these instructions assume Windows XP)

Say your domain is example.com. First, you want to figure out what IP address Dreamhost assigned to your domain. Open a command prompt window, and type this:

nslookup example.com ns1.dreamhost.com

It will give you something like this:

Name: example.com
Address: 192.0.34.166

Now, you want to tell your computer that example.com is 192.0.34.166. Edit the file C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (create it if it doesn’t exist)

Add a line like this to the file:

192.0.34.166 example.com

and save the file. Back on the command line, type:

ipconfig /flushdns
nslookup example.com

You should see that your domain now points to Dreamhost’s IP address (as least as far as your computer is concerned)

To restore normal behaviour, remove the line you added to your “hosts” file.
