Mysql crash on shared server

On July 14, 2019 at 8:15 AM Eastern Time, the mysql server crashed, taking down my entire site. Everything was working great up until the crash, and I was not working on the site at the time.

The first trigger for the error cascade was “(HY000/2002): Connection refused” when a new mysqli database connection was initiated. If this connection fails, nothing on the page works.

The error.log file was quite large (and grew with every page refresh). After about 10 minutes the site came back.

My concern (obviously besides the site downtime) is that this may happen frequently, and I would have no way of knowing.

What can I do about these crashes? Anything? Is there a mysql error log that I can access somehow?
