Moving Hosts

#1

Ok so I took the plunge and signed up. $104 for 2 years with a 97-day guarantee, what’s to lose?

My current site, http://www.kevin-jarrett.net, runs PostNuke. I also run Wordpress for my weblog at http://www.kevin-jarrett.net/blog.

I have not yet changed the DNS entries to Dreamhost, I would like to do the installs first and once it’s working (presumably with some machine-IP-specific URL not in DNS) then just change it over and have it resolve properly. Is this possible? How do I find out the URL that I can use to access my site on the web before it’s in DNS?

I am pretty familiar with PHPMyAdmin/MySQL and can get backups of all my databases. I will handle the PostNuke install and presumably will be able to import the database and then be good to go. Correct?

With Wordpress it has to be a similar process though I would like to try the one-click install thingamajig. If so, can I just import the WP database into whatever DB I create on here?

I thinj that’s all for now. I have a long weekend to get this all going. Appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Go to DOMAINS/[Add New Domain / Sub-Domain] and in Mirroring add ANYNAME.DREAMHOSTERS.COM

DONE!

Later you can access the website ussing http://theNAME.DREAMHOSTERS.COM

and the ftp address is too theNAME.DREAMHOSTERS.COM

Thanks zegames. I’ve added the mirrored domain as you said.

Are you saying my new site can be temporarily accessed at

http://xxx.dreamhosters.com

where xxx = my username?

I am able to FTP to my account using the ‘normal’ credentials, shouldn’t I just keep using those?

BTW I have the Wiki up and am continuing to get the process down.

Thanks again.

Ok. I’ve got the mirrored site up. Thanks.

I’m ready to install PostNuke. I have the backup from my current host with all files as well as the MySQL db backup.

How do I import the MySQL db contents into the one I created on Dreamhost?

Wish I had CPanel… :confused:

Ah well. This isn’t a good sign. Tried searching the wiki. Got this.

A database error has occurred

Nope, not good for my first few hours as a customer, not good at all.

make sure that you creat one database in cpanel…

Now, go to ssh and use this command:

mysql -h hostname.com -u myuser -p databasename < /path/to/file.sql

or you can restore by phpmyadmin, where http://DATABASENAME.yourdomain.com is the door for phpmyadmin

Thanks, I am using

http://XXXX.YYYY.dreamhosters.com

where

XXXX = my postnuke DB name
YYYY = my temporary subdomain name for Dreamhosters

and it is not working yet. Guess I need to give it a few more minutes.

XXX.dreamhosters.com = database

YYY.dreamhosters.com = web page

To see if you have the right host name, check in the panel. There’s a list of database with links that show the host name for that datbase. Also the datbase name isn’t necessarly a part of the host name. And, sub-sub-domains will work, if that’s where you set it up at.
