MediaWiki:Sidebar problems?

I’m trying to change the sidebar in my one-click easy install MediaWiki. When I first went to MediaWiki:Sidebar, I saw what I guess is a default version, because I couldn’t edit the page. I could create it, and did. But the changes don’t seem to take effect - period. I just see the default (which seems to vary as I wander around - at least, the contents of the Toolbox change).

I’m confused, and the MediaWiki help doesn’t really help.

Help?

Thanks.

What part of the sidebar are you trying to change? I’m able to add entries to the Navigation menu.

Hi Scott!

I tried to add a new section, with no visible results:

  • SEARCH
  • navigation
    ** mainpage|mainpage-description
    ** portal-url|portal
    ** currentevents-url|currentevents
    ** recentchanges-url|recentchanges
    ** randompage-url|randompage
    ** helppage|help
  • Operating Activities
    ** SpartanSprint|The Spartan Sprint
    ** FlightOfTheBumblebees|Flight of the Bumblebees
    ** TopOfTheWorld|Top of the World
  • TOOLBOX
  • LANGUAGES

I also just tried reordering elements:

  • SEARCH
  • navigation
    ** mainpage|mainpage-description
    ** portal-url|portal
    ** currentevents-url|currentevents
    ** recentchanges-url|recentchanges
    ** randompage-url|randompage
    ** helppage|help
  • TOOLBOX
  • LANGUAGES

with no results.

And I tried adding something to the Navigation menu

  • SEARCH
  • navigation
    ** mainpage|mainpage-description
    ** portal-url|portal
    ** currentevents-url|currentevents
    ** recentchanges-url|recentchanges
    ** randompage-url|randompage
    ** helppage|help
  • TOOLBOX
  • LANGUAGES

with no results.

I’m editing

http://wiki.adventure-radio.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sidebar&action=edit

maybe I have the URL wrong, somehow?

You may just have a browser caching issue. I’m able to bump Search to the top of the sidebar:
http://easywiki.scottdayman.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Sidebar

I’m not sure how many of those changes are legal within the sidebar (I’m not a wiki expert). The w: syntax doesn’t look right. Adding an entire new section may require more than just throwing in a few lines to the navigation section.

Here’s a page I’m using for reference:
http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Sidebar

Not a caching issue; I just started up IE (had been using Firefox) and can’t see my changes. Search is still in the middle, not the top.

When you visit

http://wiki.adventure-radio.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Sidebar

do you see Search at the top?

Very very odd. (The w: syntax is probably wrong, but should at least display…)

It’s interesting that the only difference between our two is that one line where I have DreamHost, and you have the w:. That help link I posted said something along the lines that incomplete entries will be ignored. How about taking that w: line out and see what happens?

-Scott

Sure; I took it out. Now the only difference from “stock” should be that SEARCH is at the top.

No Joy.

Did you have to create the page before you edited it?

Yes, I had to click the Create tab before I could do anything. So this is certainly odd. I’ve now taken that DreamHost line out so our source is identical. Yep, this is odd.

-Scott

Well. Hmm. You guys don’t provide support on MediaWiki, but … :frowning:

I’m just a customer here. You could try to hit the mediawiki forums, or Google around a bit.

Thanks. Off I go…
