Mac users, I need your help

I’ve moved my website over to MediaWiki and because I’ve changed some of the CSS, I’m not able to check to make sure it displays correctly on a Mac. It didn’t initially on IE and I had to make some changes to the fix files. That has me thinking there could be an issue. Here is the link:

Any feedback from a Mac user would be very appreciated. The problem with IE was that the edit and discussion tabs were floating around and not where they were suppose to be. Thanks.

While I don’t know what is supposed to be good or bad, it did load OK on Firefox. But that isn’t a Mac matter, since Firefox works essentially the same on all platforms it supports. Internet Explorer is always the annoying exception, and I have to make little changes to all my sites to accommodate its quirks.

As to Safari on the Mac, the discussion, view source and history links at the top on the main page don’t display.

If you’re drawing income from this, you should spend $599 for a Mac mini, which would use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse as your PC, and that way you could cross-check. I’m happy to work with you if I can, but I may not be able to communicate enough information for you to go on.

I tested it with FireFox on my PC and never had any trouble. It sounds like it works equally as well on the Mac. As far as Safari, I’m not sure I know how to fix that. All I’ve done is move that section and the tabs down some. If it doesn’t show up at all, I’m not sure what the problem is, unless it’s being overwritten by another page element.
The site is run as a part-time business, so your suggestion about getting a Mac mini is a good one. I hadn’t thought I needed one in the past.
Is Safari the ‘default’ browser for Mac, akin to IE? At this point, I’m not sure whether I should tell Mac users to use FireFox when viewing the site or try to work out the problem with Safari.

Safari is indeed the default browser on the Mac (although a lot of us use Firefox too and several other browsers, including Opera, OmniWeb, Camino, which is a Firefox variant that’s Mac OS X only), and with an estimated 3-4% of the online market these days, you are going to want to make sure it’s compatible, because it’s based on an open-source project that includes Linux browsers too.

If you want to save money on a Mac mini, check http://apple.com/store for offers covering refurbished models. You can save up to $100 or so that way, and get a full new product warranty.

Gene,
Thank you very much for the time you spent testing the different browsers. I’ll either end up getting a Mac or find a friend of a friend that has one. Your testing has shown me that there is an issue, so I’ll have to work on it. Thanks again.

It’s all a part of my humble efforts to check all my sites on various browsers. Call it paranoia, but I’ve managed to get everything to function with Internet Explorer and somehow work on all the other major browsers. I even had my Webmaster work with the folks at Opera to fix a display problem. Of course, saying that, someone will send me a note now showing how we still have a few problems – all this while my Webmaster is on extended leave.

Peace,
Gene
