Just a basic question:

#1

Hey all, im trying to build a forum - i havent done this before. As i am going through following the instructions i get to this part. please help show me hoe to do this - im not to sure what it means:

If you haven’t done so already, create a new directory on your server named appropriately (if you wanted to access the forums via ‘http://www.domain.com/forums/’, create a directory called ‘forums’ in the ‘public_html’ or ‘www’ directory on your webserver.

Well, how do i create the web directory? or where within my admin tool can i do this?

Thanks!

I don’t think you can do it via the Web Control Panel. You’ll need an FTP program like WS_FTP. Get a FREE version at ipswitch.com … a bit tricky to get to there though.

Alright - i have an FTP and i opened it and connected to my domain… it asked for password and i inserted it - then it said it was connected. i double clicked on my domain, and i created forums there inside my domain folder - though it keeps telling me i have to:

CHMOD these to “0777”

I was wondering what this is - or how do i CHMOD?

Thanks for your time!

It depends on your FTP client. In WS_FTP, I believe you right click on the file or directory and you can then set the permissions somehow - maybe someone else can give more specific instructions.

Yes, just right click when you highlight the directory or file and choose “chmod (UNIX)”. For 777, check ALL 9 boxes, i.e. Read, Write, Execute for Owner, Group and Other. I forgot if DreamHost allows this or not.
